ASHRAE ACKNOWLEDGES METAL BUILDING U-FACTORS IN 90.1 STANDARD DO NOT REFLECT TYPICAL INSTALLATIONS, PROPOSES REVISED U-FACTORS FOR 90.1-2010 STANDARD Thermal Design has conducted tests on typical, over-the-purlin insulation methods to determine their actual installed R-values as opposed to the labeled R-values. Hot box testing by Oak Ridge National Laboratory was conducted to demonstrate the thermal performance of metal building roof assemblies according to ASTM C 1363, "Standard Test Method for the Thermal Performance of Building Assemblies by Means of a Hot Box Apparatus." Tests were also conducted at the University of Illinois to "determine the realistic and achievable thickness of fiberglass insulation when installed with conventional over-the-purlin techniques."
